CSV vs JSON: differences and common uses

The right format depends on the shape of the data and the system reading it.

CSV

CSV represents rows and columns and works well for spreadsheets, exports and simple tables. Quoting, separators, encodings and leading zeros need care.

JSON

JSON represents objects, arrays, nested values and explicit types. It is useful for APIs and application data, but less convenient for manual editing of large tables.

Before converting

  1. Check the header row and whether every record has the same columns.
  2. Confirm the source encoding and delimiter.
  3. Protect IDs with leading zeros and fields containing commas or line breaks.
  4. Inspect the converted output by parsing it again.

Use the CSV Data Cleaning Studio to inspect, validate and export a cleaned CSV copy locally.
