How to compress images without losing more quality than necessary
Start with the destination limit, then inspect the actual output.
1. Set a real limit
Find the upload limit first. A target such as 200 KB is a maximum, not a promise that every image can reach it without visible damage.
2. Choose the output format
JPEG is often effective for photographs. WebP can preserve transparency and may be smaller when the destination supports it. PNG input is re-encoded when you choose JPEG or WebP, so inspect edges and transparent areas.
3. Decide whether dimensions may change
If quality falls too far, allowing smaller dimensions can help. The aspect ratio should remain unchanged, and a smaller file may be more useful than an unreadable full-size image.
4. Review before uploading
Check the actual byte size, dimensions and a zoomed view of text or fine detail. Keep the original so you can retry with a larger target.
Use Compress Images for a target size, or Resize Images when dimensions are the main requirement.
