JPEG vs PNG vs WebP: Which image format should you use?

Choose the format based on the image and the destination.

JPEG

JPEG is a practical choice for photographs and other images with many colors. It is lossy, so repeated exports or very low quality can create visible blocks and ringing. It does not preserve transparency.

PNG

PNG preserves rendered pixels and supports transparency. It is useful for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, but photographic PNG files can be much larger than JPEG or WebP.

WebP

WebP supports lossy and lossless encoding plus transparency. It can be a useful web delivery format when the receiving service accepts it. Check the target platform before converting.

Check the result

  1. Keep the original file.
  2. Choose a format accepted by the destination.
  3. Compare dimensions, transparency and visible detail after conversion.

Use Convert Images to change formats locally, or Compress Images when a size limit matters.
