Convert a PNG image into one multi-size ICO file

Create an icon for a website favicon or a Windows shortcut. Pick sizes, preserve the image proportions with transparent space or center-crop it, and check how your design reads at small sizes before downloading.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose one still PNG up to 20 MiB and 16 million pixels. A 256 × 256 or larger square image is a good starting point.
  2. Use the recommended 16, 32, 48 and 256 px preset, or select sizes. Choose fit or center-crop, optional padding and a transparent, white or black background.
  3. Create the ICO, inspect actual-size previews on light and dark backgrounds, and download the single .ico file.

A practical example

For a wide transparent logo, keep Fit selected to preserve the entire design. If the lettering is unreadable at 16 px, use a simpler symbol instead of stretching it. Download the ICO; for a website you still need to place it in your site assets and link it from the page head.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ICO just a renamed PNG?

No. This converter writes an ICO directory with image sizes, lengths and offsets. Smaller entries contain 32-bit bitmap pixels and transparency masks; the 256 px entry contains PNG data.

Does it keep transparency and image proportions?

Yes by default. Fit centers the entire image with transparent space and no stretching. Fill center-crops it to a square. Choosing white or black deliberately fills the output background. Preview background changes do not change output.

Which sizes should I select?

The default includes 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels. Favicon uses 16, 32 and 48. Other selectable sizes are 24, 64 and 128. Bigger output from a small source may look blurry; no AI upscaling is performed.

How do I use the icon?

For a Windows shortcut, use Properties and Change Icon where available; an ICO is not an executable. For a website, upload the file and reference it with a rel="icon" link. Browser caching can delay favicon updates. This tool does not produce Apple touch icons, ICNS or PWA manifest packages.
