Why a MIDI file resets your instrument

Check the messages before blaming the plugin.

What can change an instrument?

A Program Change selects a patch; Bank Select controllers CC0 and CC32 can select a bank. A MIDI clip containing these events may request a different instrument during playback. Whether the request takes effect depends on the receiving instrument and its configuration.

A controlled check

  1. Keep the original MIDI and project. Open a copy in the MIDI inspector.
  2. Review Program Change and CC0/CC32 counts. Their presence is evidence of messages, not evidence that they are unwanted.
  3. Select Remove Program Changes and, if needed, Bank Select. Leave other options off.
  4. Create a copy, review the removal count, and import it into a separate DAW track using the same instrument.

What if the problem remains?

Check automation and plugin settings in the host project. This tool changes the MIDI file, not your project or plugin. Do not remove sustain, expression or pitch bend just because they are present; they may carry the performance.
